Dominance of American Cinema

America can touch all of Europe with stories, but Europe cannot cover the entire market with its own stories. Why is this, actually?

Will it work if we address more universal themes, as we did centuries ago with fairy tales? Or is more needed, for example more synergy within the production, distribution and exploitation process? We are increasingly forced to scrutinize ourselves as Europe, but are we actually capable of doing so? And what do we need for that?

In this masterclass Adriaan Bijl discusses the American studio system, using Paramount Pictures as a case study. The evening before, we watch a Paramount film (Ghost) on 16mm, so you can immediately relate the material to the specific, recognizable aspects Adriaan highlights in this session. He uses examples we all know and focuses on the general public reaction that follows. Why can't we do this as well in Europe? If it were up to Adriaan Bijl, the answer is crystal clear: unity is strength.
